Further Studies

The Hawza Online Further Studies programme is designed to provide a specialised postgraduate-level education in Islamic studies, building on the foundational knowledge acquired through undergraduate-level Hawza and Arabic studies. This one-year online programme, open to graduates from Hawza Online and qualified applicants from other similar programmes, focuses on three crucial areas: Supervised Research, Advanced Principles of Jurisprudence, and Advanced Qur’anic and Hadith Arabic. Students have the flexibility to tailor their learning experience by selecting up to two out of these three elements, enabling them to deepen their knowledge, refine their skills, and prepare for impactful roles in community service or academia.

Programme Objectives

  • To equip students with the foundational skills necessary for conducting research in Islamic studies, enabling them to produce work that contributes to the academic field and serves the community.
  • To deepen students’ understanding of Advanced Principles of Jurisprudence, improving their analytical and critical thinking skills in applying these principles.
  • To enhance students’ Arabic language proficiency, with emphasis on reading, comprehension, and engagement with Qur’anic and Hadith texts.

Admission Criteria

  • Completion of at least 220 credits of Hawza Online’s Hawza Studies and Arabic programmes, or equivalent programmes comprising at least three years of study in Hawza/Islamic studies at a recognised hawza, college, or university.
  • Submission of the  Application Form.
  • Successful interview demonstrating the applicant’s commitment and potential to benefit from the programme.

Programme Structure

  • Description: Under the guidance of experienced mentors, students will initiate two research endeavours, each chosen to engage with key topics in Islamic studies. These projects will emphasise the development of essential research skills to provide insights into significant academic themes and contribute to addressing community needs.
  • Outcome: Production of two research papers, approximately 7,000 words each. Participants will receive dedicated support to refine and submit their work for publication in appropriate academic journals, helping them strengthen their academic profile and research credentials.
  • Assessment: Research papers will be assessed based on foundational research skills, originality, scope of research, analytical clarity, and the ability to effectively synthesise scholarly material. Additionally, evaluations will consider the potential to contribute to academic discussions and address community issues.
  • Fees: £460. Scholarships are available.

Description: This module covers the second of a three-tiered series of books by al-Sayyid Muḥammad Bāqir al-Ṣadr on the Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh). The discussions focus on the principles governing lexical and non-lexical indications used to derive Islamic law from textual and rational evidence, and conclude with the methods for resolving conflicting proofs. Although the topics covered in this volume follow the same sequence as those presented in the first book and address many of the same themes, the discussions are considerably more detailed and analytical. By the end of the module, students will have progressed beyond a foundational understanding of uṣūl al-fiqh to engage confidently with its more intricate discussions and modes of legal reasoning.

Prerequisites: Logic, Principles of Jurisprudence, and Arabic Level 1.

  • Structure: Delivered over two semesters, this course includes pre-recorded lectures and live interactive tutorials.
  • Assessment: Students must pass three tests per semester, assessing their understanding of the material and ability to apply principles in varied contexts.

  • Description: An intensive course aimed at enhancing students’ Arabic language skills, with a focus on comprehension, expression, and analytical engagement with Qur’anic and Hadith texts.
  • Structure: The course is spread over two semesters, incorporating reading, writing, and oral skills development.
  • Assessment: Evaluation will be based on continuous assessment, including quizzes and written and oral tests.
  • Fees: £460 (includes 96 live lessons delivered over two semesters). Scholarships are available.
